St. Canice’s Cathedral & Round Tower

St Canice’s Cathedral is one of the major monuments in Kilkenny. The name of the town itself translate from the Irish “the church of Kenny”, Kenny being its Saint Patron Canice and “Kil” meaning “church”. Built in an English Gothic style, Saint Canice’s Cathedral is considered the second longest cathedral in Ireland. Study the architecture and interiors, which have been carefully preserved in the original style. Although the Church was built in the 13th Century after the Norman Saxon invasion, the round tower is prior to it. The Celtic monument dates from the 9th century and stands 30m (100 ft) tall which gives a breathtaking view over the entire city.
